Edric Lim Xian Jun, 19, who emerged Champion in NSRCC’s bowling competition, and received the $300 House Award on 29 September 2024

Motivated by his brother who was keen to pick up bowling, Edric Lim Xian Jun, then aged 11, joined him in 2017. Over the past eight years, Edric has trained diligently, bowling thrice weekly or even more, sharpening his focus both physically, and mentally.

“Bowling is a physical activity that keeps me active, and makes me mentally stronger,” said Edric, who started out as a one-handed bowler in 2017, before transitioning to a two-handed style in 2019, adapting his technique for better control and power.

Surmounting the Roadblocks

That said, bowling is not without its challenges. Edric, now aged 19, contended with tough lane conditions, and lackluster performance which adversely affect his mental condition, and yield worse results.

With each competition, Edric grows stronger mentally. He perceives that experience and practice are integral to navigating the challenges.

Experience equips bowlers with the techniques to adopt in response to different situations while keeping them mentally resilient. This ensures that one bad shot doesn’t throw the bowlers off their entire game. Practice builds trust, enabling bowlers to bowl with confidence. My experiences develop my mental maturity, yielding better shots, and more enjoyable times,” Edric said.

Bolstering His Bowling Proficiency & Accomplishing the House Award

Besides constant practice, Edric’s coaches play indispensable roles in equipping and empowering him with the skills to amplify his bowling proficiency.

“My first coach AK Yong equipped me the knowledge and skills I possess today. Currently, I am also under Coach Jerome who shares tips on upgrading my game further while ensuring I stay in my top form. I always aim to make quality shots, and pick up all my spares to keep my game at its peak,” he said.

Thanks to consistent training, steadfast guidance and mentorship of his coaches, Edric emerged the champion in NSRCC’s bowling competition. He achieved his personal best with 289 pinfalls on the first game during his Single’s League on 29 September 2024, attaining the $300 House Award.

Winning definitely feels good. All the hard work that I put in, and the coaches’ dedication have paid off, and I am rewarded for it. It also motivates me to keep pushing on, growing and becoming better versions of myself,” Edric said.

His advice for aspiring bowlers?

“Don’t give up. Your hard work will pay off. Bowling at the NSRCC is enjoyable and challenging. The coach conceives creative ways to put one’s consistency to the test, while honing one’s abilities, for example, in spare shooting,” he said.
